The History of Alamo Heights

The history of Alamo Heights, Texas, is quite interesting. There was an Indian campground where many individuals came by to rest and enjoy the area. It was known as Yanaguana in 1691 and then the name was changed to San Antonio de Padua. By 1836 the area had been changed to Alamo Heights and it was included in the San Antonio survey as public land. Since it was public land the area was sold in 1837 and purchased by James R. Sweet. The land was bought and sold various times. In the 1900s the area was almost annexed as part of San Antonio. However, after a vote in 1922, Alamo Heights became an independent municipality. And, Alamo Heights has remained independent of San Antonio ever since.

There are plenty of colleges and universities in and around Alamo Heights, Texas. Some of these include St. Mary’s University, The University of Texas Health Science-San Antonio, San Antonio College, Trinity University, and more.
